Best Things To Do in Uganda

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Uganda has some of the best trekking journeys to see mountain gorillas in the jungle. You literally enter the beating heart of the African bush. Mountain gorillas live in the rain forests of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, but Uganda stands head and shoulders above the rest.

There remain plenty of low-cost gorilla trekking experiences in Bwindi and Mgahinga parks. The fees for gorilla trekking for international visitors are USD  800. Fees in Rwanda are nearly three times as much, and Congo has an air of political instability that discourages most.

Gorilla trekking: Uganda has the highest number of habituated gorilla families, with 19 so far available for trekking. Bwindi is the only place where tourists can have a gorilla habituation experience. Mountain gorillas in this national park have not been as fully habituated as in other habituated groups.

Chimpanzee Trekking In Uganda

Chimpanzees, like gorillas and orangutans, are part of the great ape family. Uganda is home to more than 5,600 wild chimpanzees making it the largest population of the common chimpanzee in the world; also, there’s several habituated communities.

The best places for chimpanzee tracking in Uganda are in Kibale National Park, Budongo Forest, Kyambura Gorge, Kalinzu Forest, and Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve. Among them, Kibale Forest is No 1 destination for chimpanzee safaris with the highest chimpanzee population of 1,500 and the highest trekking chance. The journey to Kalinzu Forest and Budongo Forest is a beautiful tropical rainforest that is worth visiting. Besides, the experience of trekking in these forests is quite delightful where you can see hordes of other primates and wild animals.

Birding In Uganda

Uganda, with more than 1,000 species in relatively small areas, harbours perhaps the highest densities of birds of any country. This is probably because the relatively wet climate and rainfall sustain the constantly lush vegetation of Uganda, especially near Lake Victoria, the Nile Outlet and the Albertine Rift. Birders can find a high density of birds in the following National Parks and the Shrub and Swampland Protection Area of the Mabamba Swamps: Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Lake Mburo, Murchison Falls, and Semuliki National Parks.

Birders come here to look for endemic birds (such as the shoebill, great blue turaco, standard-winged nightjar and African green broadbill) and migrants (greater and lesser flamingo, sooty tern, northern bald ibis, greytail and isabelline wheatear) with Bwindi having 347 species including 24 Albertine Rift endemics, and Murchison Falls boasting more than 451. Each of the national parks offers something special.

Uganda National Parks & Attractions

For whom is a Uganda safari best suited?

Its combination of diverse wildlife, beautiful natural landscapes and captivating cultural history make Uganda an appealing safari destination for a broad market. Here are a few more facts and figures that will further support this view:

1. For The Wild At Heart

– More than 95 mammal species call Queen Elizabeth National Park home: there are African elephants, lions, leopards and the park’s famous tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector.

– Murchison Falls National Park, home to the most powerful waterfall in the world, where the River Nile forces its way through a narrow gorge with incredible drama.

– Among the 13 species of primates found there, Kibale National Park has the highest primate density in Africa; it is home to an endangered red colobus monkey and others such as a rare L’Hoest’s monkey.

2. Nature Lovers:

– Uganda is home to more than 5,000 square kilometres of wetlands including the globally significant Ramsar listed Mabamba Bay Wetland, a Ramsar wetland site of international importance which hosts the shoebill stork.

The country harbours at least 5,000 plants, of which 400 are exclusive to it, including the cycad plant and the giant lobelia.

Lake Bunyonyi, second deepest in Africa at up to 900m (2,952ft) deep, lies in southwest Uganda.

3. The Thrillers:

4. Birders

Over 1,000 bird species are found in Uganda!

The Albertine Rift, which rips through western Uganda, boasts more than 40 birds that are found nowhere else, including the Rwenzori turaco and the handsome francolin.

– The Mabamba Bay Wetland supports more than 300 species of birds such as the papyrus gonolek and the white-winged warbler.

– Near Uganda’s international airport, Entebbe Botanical Gardens host more than 115 bird species in its 40 hectares, making it perfect for birdwatching.

5. Culture:

It includes the Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the kings of Buganda are buried and from which the history and cultural traditions of the kingdom can be understood.

Nyero Rock Paintings, an ancient rock art site in eastern Uganda, more than 3,000 years old – part of the country’s early human history.

Igongo Cultural Centre in Mbarara includes a museum, cultural arena for performances and handicrafts market displaying the traditions and heritage of the Ankole.

6. Responsible Tourism:

– The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) pays 20 per cent of park entry fees to local community projects such as schools, health clinics and infrastructure 2013.

– Many of the safari lodges in Uganda, including Volcanoes Safaris’ Bwindi Lodge, which is nestled high up above the jungle, and Kyambura Gorge Lodge, which is in the lowland forest, use sustainable materials and renewable energy sources.

• The Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary on Lake Victoria provides a safe haven for several rescued and orphaned chimpanzees, with educational programmes for visitors and for people living around Kampala.

These further figures highlight why Uganda is one of the best-kept destinations for safaris, with the ultimate experiences for wildlife lovers, nature enthusiasts, thrill-seekers, birdwatchers, culture-seekers or responsible travellers.

The best time to visit Uganda on a safari is during the dry seasons, which are from June to August and from December to February, when the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for outdoor activities and watching wildlife since the lack of rain means animals tend to congregate around watering holes.

June, July and August are perhaps the busiest months of the year to travel here: the dry season makes trekking through the forests easier, and it’s in these warmer months that the gorillas tend to stay closer to the park limits, increasing your chances of finding them and therefore your chances of having a successful encounter. These are the months when the permits sell out well in advance.

To avoid the busier season, the quietest time is from December to February, but it does occasionally rain so the scenery is lush and green and birdwatching is great. This time of year is ideal for combining your safari with the mountain trekking and hiking in mountainous areas, such as the mountain gorillas in the Rwenzori Mountains, or city life in busy Kampala.
