Visit the oldest national park in Africa, Virunga National Park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is home to a third of the remaining mountain gorillas in the world, as well as a remarkable variety of other stunning landscapes, from volcanoes to savannas to lowland forests. The park is also the site of the largest lava lake in the world on the slopes of Mount Nyiragongo, currently active, and can be climbed as a day hike from the park.
Uganda, often called “Africa’s Pearl,” lives up to its name with over 1,000 bird species. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can spot the prehistoric-looking Shoebill. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a hotspot for Albertine Rift endemics, while Queen Elizabeth National Park boasts over 600 recorded species.
South Africa, while hosting a smaller but still impressive count of about 850 bird species, offers some of the continent’s most accessible birding. The country boasts unique species such as the Cape Sugarbird and the national bird, the Blue Crane. Kruger National Park is a birder’s haven with over 500 species.
Kenya tops the list with over 1,100 bird species, making it a prime destination for birders. The country’s varied habitats, from the lush Kakamega Forest to the flamingo-filled Lake Nakuru, provide homes for unique species like the Grey-crested Helmet-shrike and Hinde’s Babbler. Samburu National Reserve is particularly noted for its dry country species.
Other prominent birding destinations include Tanzania, Rwanda, Gambia and Malawi.
Famous for their distinctive attire of red shukas (traditional fabrics) and intricate beadwork, the semi-nomadic pastoralists form a vibrant part of the tourist experience in the area. They promote their vibrant culture through traditional dances, allowing visitors to participate, and also through guided visits to traditional Maasai bomas (homesteads), where tourists can learn about the local way of life and customs.
Zanzibar, just off the coast of Tanzania, is a distinctive mixture of African, Arab and Indian cultures, reflected in its architecture, cuisine and customs. Stone Town, with its blizzard of tiny alleyways, looming old buildings, rambling bazaars, is another of Tanzania’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. Spice tours introduce the visitor to its part in the spice trade, there’s a former slave market to see, and some quite lovely beaches.
The province of KwaZulu-Natal is home to the Zulu, South Africa’s largest ethnic group, a fiercely proud people with a rich culture, tradition, and fierce sense of identity. Different cultures offer different perspectives, and visitors to the province can get an insight into Zulu culture at traditional villages and in cultural shows. Victoria Falls, on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, is one of the greatest natural spectacles the world has to offer. It is locally named ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’, meaning ‘the smoke that thunders’. Adrenaline-inducing outdoor activities include white-water rafting on the Zambezi River, bungee jumping from the Victoria Falls Bridge, helicopter sightseeing flights over the falls and swimming in the Devil’s Pool at the top of the falls (during the dry season).
Sossusvlei, part of the desert landscape of the Namib region of southwestern Namibia, is known for its vast, rugged red sand dunes, some of which rise to 100m and are the tallest in the world. You can hike up the dunes (Dune 45 and Dune 7) – Big Daddy is the most popular – or take a hot air balloon ride over the desert, or a scenic flight over the dunes and the Namib-Naukluft National Park.
Adventure tourism activities abound along the Garden Route on South Africa’s south-eastern coast, a picturesque corridor of lush forests, rugged coastlines and sparkling lagoons that stretches for 300km (186 miles) along the Indian Ocean. At the Bloukrans Bridge, the highest commercial bungee jump in the world, you can fling yourself off a 216 metre (709 foot) platform that causes the rope to stretch a third of the original length. In the Tsitsikamma Forest above the Storms River, you can zipline from one platform to another; on the lagoon, you can kayak; and at one of the many great breaks along the coast you can surf.
Zanzibar, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean and part of Tanzania, boasts white sandy beaches, coral reefs, a ‘bush-and-beaches’ experience and a romantic atmosphere. Swim and snorkel amid the vibrantly coloured coral reefs in the extremely clear water between Kendwa and Nungwi beaches, as well as in Paje, a beach in southern Zanzibar. Take a one- or two-hour sunset dhow cruise along Zanzibar’s coast. Water sports, both in the sea and on lagoons, are available as well: kitesurfing, stand-up paddleboarding and more.
South Africa’s oldest city and its second most populated, Cape Town is well known for its glorious beaches, each with its own distinctive character and attractions. Camps Bay, boasting a pristine white-sand beach overlooked by the magnificent Twelve Apostles mountain range, is the place to go for sophisticated beach-side access to mingling with the beautiful people and their beautiful things.
On the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya is Diani Beach, routinely named as one of Africa’s best stretches of sand – a soft, sugary white expanse dotted with palm trees and sisal plants, incorporating crystal-clear waters and densely packed coastal forests.
