Climb Mount Nyiragongo

Mount Nyiragongo is an active volcano located in Virunga National Park, and climbing to its summit is an adventurous and unforgettable experience. The trek to the top takes around 4-6 hours, passing through lush forests and rugged volcanic terrain. Upon reaching the summit, visitors are rewarded with a stunning view of the world’s largest lava lake, bubbling and churning in the volcano’s crater. The sight is particularly mesmerizing at night when the glowing lava illuminates the darkness. FAQs about Safaris in DR Congo

You can go at all times, but the most appropriate time is the dry season, which is in June, July, and August and at the very end of the year, December, January and February. These are the best times to go there, weather-wise, and also for the safari because when you go trekking everything is dry. The climate is temperate in the east, with about 1,500mm of rain per year on average.

Yes, in general, a DRC Safari is more expensive as it’s remote, with a limited infrastructure and logistical challenges to overcome, such as gorilla trekking permits that cost $400 a person just for the permit himself! Prices for a budget safari start from as little as $300 a night per person, to luxury safaris priced at $1,000 a night per person.

The eastern part of the country is where you’ll find the DRC’s most popular attraction and famous activity: gorilla trekking. The DRC hosts the only remaining and rapidly dwindling population of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas, which number around 1,000, divided between the Virunga National Park and the Kahuzi-Biega National Park in the east of the country. Elsewhere in the DRC, you can expect to see chimpanzees, okapis, forest elephants, and a host of colourful birds. The extreme biodiversity of the DRC can be traced to a mix of biotic and topographic factors; there are currently at least 400 mammal species and 1,100 bird species recorded.

The DRC has a number of unusual safari destinations, based mostly on gorilla trekking and wilderness experiences. Virunga National Park, originally established in 1925 and considered Africa’s oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has just reopened for tourism after closure from 1994, following many years of armed conflict. Virunga is famous for its mountain gorillas and active volcanoes. Kahuzi-Biega National Park, south of Virunga, contains the endangered eastern lowland gorillas. Garamba National Park is one of four DRC national parks on the UNESCO World Heritage List in Danger. Garamba has elephant and other wildlife, and is about the same size as Kahuzi-Biega. In total, the DRC has nine national parks, covering almost 8 per cent of the country’s land area.

DRC Safaris offers gorilla treks and nature safaris. There are two main gorilla trekking destinations in the DRC: Virunga National Park and Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Friendly encounters with the fascinating gorillas are the key attraction. Other activities can be arranged on request, such as trekking for chimpanzees, guided nature walks, ornithological expeditions and visits to rural communities. The DRC safari circuit is very nascent, and due to the political instability, and deficit in infrastructure possibilities thus far, visitor numbers are quite modest.
